Having Survived

The first and most dangerous man I ever knew introduced in me the impulse to survive. Among other forms of torture, he did this by restricting my access to sustenance. Fully realizing that I depended on him to eat, buy pads, go to school, and ensure a roof over my head, he practiced the most violent form of neglect—economic control.
